Westmoreland and Cumberland Yeomanry (WCYC) Officer's Undress Frock Coat Button, 1840s/50s
A rare mounted gilt button, two piece construction, fixed shank, back marked W Buckmaster & Co (A London based firm of military outfitters). A small demi-ball button at circa 15mm in diameter. Fire gilt finish superb and bright, in extremely good condition. The cypher on most of these buttons were extremely hard to read, but this one is simple with the letters WCYC entwined below a Victorian crown.
In the mid 19th Century officers of many regiments wore high quality style buttons on blue frock coats; sometimes referred to as Mufti buttons. Usually found in two sizes 20mm and 13 - 15mm.
Ripley & Damanin "Yeomanry Buttons 1830 - 2000" fig 223 refers (see final photo).
