WW1 Special Constable Northumberland Constabulary Police Metal Duty Arm Badge
whilst on duty, specials wore a brassard on their arm with a duty badge. The badge was made of cast aluminium, roughly circular with a loop at each side for the belt, it is curved to the shape of the arm and the lettering is picked out in a shiny metal "Special Constable" around the sides of the officer's number, in this case E/502, with the crest of the police force in question above, in this instance that of Northumberland Constabulary, all picked out against a blackened and cross hatched background. The maker's details HIATT & Co B'HAM are stamped into the front bottom rim.
Wilkinson and Cowdell attribute these arm badges to the WW1 era (pp 150- 151).
