WW1 Silver War Badge (SWB) to Gunner Herbert A Banwell, Trench Mortar Battery (TMB), 17th Northern Division, Royal Field Artillery (RFA)
A first pattern SWB officially impressed 275310 awarded to Gunner Herbert A. Banwell, RFA. At the time of issue of his SWB he was serving with X Medium Trench Mortar Battery allocated to the 17th Northern Division (indicated by the 'X17' on his SWB card index). An unmarked silver circlet inscribed 'For King And Empire Services Rendered' bearing crowned 'GRI' Imperial Cypher to voided centre. In good condition, original C clasp and pin. Circa 32mm in diameter.
122890 Gunner Herbert A. Banwell enlisted on the 1st January 1916. He was entitled to a 1914-18 medal pair. He was honourably discharged aged 23 account of wounds on the 22th November 1917. Copy of CD version of SWB roll entry to together with a copy of his WW1 Medal Index Card (MIC) to be supplied.
Approximately 1,150,000 badges were issued to all services, which had to be claimed and then approved. The first pattern SWB was issued between September 1916 and March 1918, and these were of a better quality than most later stampings. Around 335,000 of these early badges were issued to all services.
