WW1 - 15th & 17th Service Battalions (The Leeds Pals) The Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment) Other Ranks Gilding Metal Brass Cap Badge
A dark toned brass die struck badge with two long original loops (bent upwards but functional) and not a slider (as found on copies). A scarce genuine example of this much copied badge. Note the upright "budgie", the short sturdy claw on each owl as it clutches the shield, a proper looking sheep rather than a thin looking dog like creature seen on the copies. There is a version with a slider which is Leeds Tram drivers not a Pals badge.
The badge is the Arms of the City of Leeds, embodying the golden fleece, symbolic of Leeds importance in the wood trade. Raised as part of Kitchener's Army.
K&K Vol 1 No 1147 refers.
