2nd Anglo - Boer War Silver Leaves Art Card - Troop Transport - Addressed to Father and Mother
Everlasting Silver Leaves From Table Mountain Cape Town South Africa. The card has now split and is in two parts. The silvered leaves are in good condition with the exception of the bottom one which has lost its tip, with a hand painted picture of one of the merchant ships used as troop transports. The other half shows a Boer Farmer's wife shaking her fist at British troops who are burning her farmstead. The caption along the bottom reads:
"Just Retribution: Burning the House and Confiscating the Goods of a Boer who Fired Upon our Troops under the White Flag".
Whilst at the time the sentiments may have fallen with the British troops, this image certainly jars with the eyes of the modern viewer. This part of the card on both card halves with some bad damage to one corner and general wear to the others.
"Everlasting" real leaves, certainly still good after 120 years! A rare image of a troop transporter.
Sent to Father and Mother from Son-in-Law, Jim.
Sold as seen.
