WW2 Campaign Medals Boxed with Entitlement Slip - 107th Royal Horse Artillery (RHA) (South Nottinghamshire Hussars Yeomanry (T.A.)) Casualty Group - Battle of Knightsbridge, North Africa

Acting Lance Sergeant W.W. Atkinson, 557738, was reported as wounded in a casualty list dated 15th June 1942 (copy to be provided). The actual date of being wounded is "not reported".

The copy of the war diary for the days immediately proceeding confirm the tragic fate of the Regiment which fought to the last shell and surrendered on the 6th June 1942 (copy to be provided). The action was immortalised in a dramatic oily painting by Terrence Cuneo.

Address on box is almost illegible (the reverse shows it is from Royal Artillery Records, Foots Cray, Sidcup, Kent), but it is just about possible to make out the name "Mr W. Atkinson" and the house number "82 .... St". and the town "Gateshead 8, Co.Durham". I cannot make out the name of the street sadly. The medal slip is still present and this confirms his army number and his entitlement to the three campaign medals:

1939-45 Star
Africa Star
War Medal

The unit transferred to 8th Army command on the 9th June 1942, which suggests he was wounded / captured (?) prior to this date as he was not entitled to an 8th Army clasp. A classic wounded / PoW group of WW2 campaign medals. I have been unable to determine whether he was also captured.

The medals are in GVF condition with replacement original ribbons (a bit grubby other than that for the Africa Star) and the box is a bit squished with the end tabs missing on the open end. Sold with copies of internet research. Any information welcome. Scarce.
