WW2 South African Middellandse (Midland) Regiment (Commandos) Brass Cap Badge

A die struck gilding metal cap badge with two original loops to the reverse (one bent with service wear) otherwise in very good condition. Circa 5.5cms tall. Scarce.

Die Middellandse Regiment (Eng variant: The Midlands Regiment( was raised at Cradock as an infantry unit in 1934. In June 1941, after a period of intensive training in the Union as a machine-gun battalion, the unit departed for Egypt. In the North African campaign various of its companies saw action at Bardia, Sollum, Halfaya, Tobruk and EI Alamein.
They were almost all captured at Tobruk. After the war the regiment was re-established as an armoured-car reconnaissance unit In 1954 its name was changed to 'Regiment Gideon Scheepers', and in 1960 to 'Regiment Groot Karoo' and a change of function to that of armoured infantry regiment.
