Awarded to certain British Army Regiments such as The 1st Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment and Troop C, 170th Independent Mortar Battery RA of the British Army were both awarded US Presidential Unit Citations for their defence of Hill 235 whilst surrounded by Chinese forces during the Battle of the Imjin River also known by the US as the Battle of Solmari. The 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry and 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment were awarded the citation for their actions during the Battle of Kapyong, shortly afterwards.

The Presidential Unit Citation was originally established as the Distinguished Unit Citation by Executive Order 9075, signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on February 26, 1942 (as amended by Executive Order 10694 signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on January 10, 1957). Its official designation was changed to the Presidential Unit Citation (Army) on November 3, 1966.

The Presidential Unit Citation may be awarded to units of the Armed Forces of the United States and cobelligerent nations for extraordinary heroism in action against an armed enemy occurring on or after December 7, 1941. The unit must display such gallantry, determination, and esprit de corps in accomplishing its mission under extremely difficult and hazardous conditions so as to set it apart from and above other units participating in the same campaign. The degree of heroism required is the same as that which would warrant the award of a Distinguished Service Cross to an individual.
