Indian Army Unattached List Gilding Metal Brass S D Cap Badge, EDVII issue, 1902 - 1910
A large thickly stamped gilding metal cap badge, UK made, with two original loops (e-w) to the reverse. Circa 5cms tall. In good condition with sharp detail. Worn on the Service Dress Cap, despite the size.
This is the Indian Army Unattached List equivalent of the Garrison Staff insignia. Both organisations wore a Royal cypher as their headdress insignia, but that in India it had the extra "I" to recognise that the Indian Army was serving the Imperatrix or Imperator (Empress or Emperor). The badge shown was for Edward VII (1902 - 1910) and replaced the VRI of Queen Victoria. A large number of odds and sods came under the Indian Unattached List, not just staff clerks. It was a billet for miscellaneous staff, but most especially SNCOs and warrant officers on extra-regimental duty. In 1910 King George V ascended and the badge changed to GRI with Tudor crown.
