Generic Special Constable Constabulary Police Mufti Enamel Buttonhole Lapel Badge

Appears to have been silver plated, some wear to this finish but the enamel is intact and in very good condition. It is fitted with a stout and functional pin fitting to the reverse.

This design was generic and manufactured by J Hudson & Co, Barr Street, Hockley, Birmingham and from the advert in the book referenced below could be supplied either with or brooch-pins or button backs. The book associates this particular badge design with the Banbury (Oxfordshire) force (p3, fig 1) as the only one worn by them during WW1, however, the book also states it was worn by other small forces often before they had a chance to acquire their own specific designs. Scarce nonetheless.

Wilkinson & Cowdell 'Special Constabulary Insignia of England & Wales' (2nd Edn) p154, Hudson & Co advert from the Police Almanac dated 1919 refers.
