Boer War Memorial Coloured Postcard - Carter's Ridge Memorial 1899 (Siege of Kimberley)
A postally unused postcard in very good condition from the Edwardian era (c1907) - the panel with those who fell at this action is just about legible with an eyeglass despite my photo of it.
The memorial cairn commemorates the officers and soldiers killed during the second battle of Carter's Ridge in November 1899 during the Siege of Kimberley, Cape Colony (modern South Africa) during the Second Boer War. The troops commemorated are mainly from The Kimberley Light Horse.
On 25th November 1899 the garrison launched a sortie on Carter’s Ridge to the South West of the town, attempting to capture the Boer artillery established on the high ground. The attack was a limited success, catching the Boers by surprise but failing to take any of the guns.
