Volunteer Medical Staff Corps (VMSC) White Metal Collar Badge

A scarce white metal collar badge for the Volunteer Medical Staff Corps Infantry Bearer Company, with two original black toned lugs to the reverse. Circa 1884 - 1902. In very good condition.

The Volunteer Corps had been authorised by the War Office on 12 May 1859, with each Volunteer Rifle Companies having a section of stretcher bearers. However, in 1884 the Volunteer Medical Staff Corps (VMSC) came into existence. In 1902, in recognition of its work in the South African War, the title changed to the Royal Army Medical Corps (Volunteers).

The photo (not included in sale) depicts Staff Sgt Alfred Owens VMSC wearing the collar badges of a Volunteer Infantry Brigade Bearer Company (RAMC/737/2).
