D-Day 6th June 1944 - 79th Armoured Division Printed Cloth Formation Sign - Hobart's Funnies

A bull 's head on a yellow triangle. Circa 7.4cms, a triangular Calico Printers printed formation sign, a bit crinkly and small stain to right side otherwise in good condition with all the tips to the points of the triangle present. Pencil annotation of unit to reverse. Scarce.

Part of 21st.Army Group, they landed in Normandy on D-Day as a specially equipped assault formation. In the thick of it, in all the heavy fighting right up until the end of the War. With much of their armour being converted into "Flails" "Kangaroos" "Crocodiles" and "Buffaloes" they were known as Hobart's Funnies, they were equipped with Flails (for mine clearance), Crocodiles ( flamethrowers ), Buffaloes ( amphibious carriers ), Kangaroos (for giving the infantry a lift) and included a specialist Assault Brigade of Royal Engineers. Worn by among others the war raised regiment of the 22nd Dragoon Guards.
