4th Territorial Battalion The Northumberland Fusiliers Other Ranks Scarlet Tunic, circa 1910 - 1914
Scarlet tunic with gosling green facings, white metal collar badges and king's crown buttons. The 4th Battalion previously wore grey tunics from but by 1910 the scarlet jacket, with gosling green facings was being introduced of which this is one. This is in great condition for age, some light staining and the odd moth graze but otherwise displays really well and you would struggle to find one in better condition.
Being a TF battalion the metal fittings were of white metal too and so would the shoulder titles, but by about 1914 gilding metal titles had been introduced for wear by the TF.
The former wearer of this jacket wore three "efficiency" stars indicating he had been returned efficient, no less than 12 times (1star = 4 returns), but the ruling stated that it need not be consecutive returns. Had the individual worn this jacket from 1910-14 and had been returned efficient four consecutive times, then the two previous stars could have been awarded some 8 years earlier. This would make the wearer and old volunteer, who possibly enlisted around 1901/02.
The rear of the jacket has a skirt of the same pattern as those worn by regulars, although the buttons are the white metal King's Crown General Service pattern.
Again the shoulder strap would be the same as those worn by regulars, except that regular units were still wearing embroidered titles. The TF appear to have gotten their jackets with plain shoulder straps allowing metal 'T' titles to be worn. Whilst there are neat slits for the shoulder titles, these are now absent (see my item 65047 for what they would have looked like).
Please note I will only post this item to a UK address.
