WW1 Patriotic Spelter Metal Picture Frame - The Home Front - The North Sea Theatre and the Royal Navy Celebrated
A very attractive original WW1 British Home Front / Royal Navy Tribute Frame. The frame is of heavy cast spelter metal depicting the Home Front with a map of Great Britain and its surrounding seas with major events marked such as the Battle of Jutland, the Sinking of Lusitania and the naval base of the Home Fleet, Scarpa Flow. Around the edge of the frame are the names of the key Admirals: Jellicoe, Beatty, Keyes, Sims, Tyrwhitt and Sturdee, and also the names of their flagships, HMS Lion, Queen Elizabeth, Arethusa, Vindictive and the dates 1914 - 1918. This frame is perhaps the most scarce in the series of frames produced as commemorative items for different theatres.
The rear is in good order with registration number 666280 (which dates it to 1919 - 1920). It measures circa 7 inches x 6 inches. The rear has a simple hook and stud arrangement to hold a postcard or photograph in place; in this instance an original postcard of the 1920s built HMS Nelson has been cut down and will be included with the frame. It retains its original metal stand too, which does not usually survive. Originally it may have held an image of a Royal Naval sailor or Home Front worker in the oval wreath, but I think the image of the ship's guns looks impressive!
Please note I will only post this item to a UK address on account of its weight and the packaging required.
