Georgian Irish Preventative Water Guard (Forerunner of the Coast Guard) Button
Circa 19mm in diameter, fixed shank and maker marked E. Jones. Dublin. Shows considerable wear but a rare button. There is lots of information about both Edward Jones and William Jones both button makers in Dublin during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars and the Regency period which followed it. At some point they joined forces but local Dublin papers confirm that on 1st January 1822 the partnership between Edward & William Jones was dissolved and that William is now the sole proprietor.
It comprises a Georgian crown above the gothic scrip letters PWG with a harp of Erin below. Thank you to Kevin for the identification, most probably George IV era.
