Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) Police Black Metal Helmet Plate 1902 - 1922

A large die struck plate with three original loops (some twisting) and what appears to be the original and correct red felt badge backing cloth. Worn on an 1878 pattern military helmet plate. Circa 10.5cms tall. Black finish in very good condition. Rare.

The Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) was Ireland's armed police force from the early nineteenth century, from 1836 until 1922. The RIC uniform also tended to look more militaristic with obvious British Military influence at the time in Ireland prior to 1922. This is seen in their choice of helmet style and rank insignia.

The RIC was disbanded in 1922 and was replaced by the Garda Síochána in the Irish Free State and the Royal Ulster Constabulary in the North of Ireland. The RUC was disbanded in 2001.
