East Africa - Tanganyika Territory Colonial Adminstrator's Large Gilt Pagri Sun Helmet Badge

Excellent quality king's crown officers gilt pagri badge with original long slider fitting to the reverse. The head of a giraffe to the centre of a crowned furled scroll bearing the title with the " GRI " cypher at the scroll junction.

This is a very scarce Tanganyika Territory badge with long slider to the reverse indicating this was for wear in the pagri folds of the tropical sun helmet. Die cast in gilded brass, this would have been worn by white officers of the civil service who provided the administration of this territory from 1922. Given the GRI cypher it suggests this was worn until 1937. A large attractive badge at circa 6.5cm tall. The hole in the slider would have enabled a securing stitch to hold it in place. Sharp detail and gilt bright.

Tanganyika Territory was the British share of the former German colony of German East Africa, which the British took under a League of Nations Mandate in 1922, and which was later transformed into a United Nations Trust Territory after World War Two.
