WW2 - 56th Independent Infantry Brigade 2nd pattern Matched Pair of Facing Woven Felt Formation Signs
An original and rare matched facing pair of formation signs, the cut down circular versions worn after D-Day when the brigade lost their independent status and joined the 49th Division. This formation sign was worn below the 3rd pattern 49th Division Polar Bears. Removed from uniform, in superb condition with the correct white mesh (does not glow under UV light tester) and black cotton backing to the reverse as found on this pattern.
The 56th was one of the independent brigades of the 21st Army Group, landing in Normandy on D-Day 6th June 1944.
The choice of the sphinx was made because it was a feature of the cap badges of the three Regiments of the Brigade - The South Wales Borderers; the Gloucestershire Regiment and the Essex Regiment.
