WW2 99th ( London Welsh) Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery Embroidered Yellow on Black Felt Cloth Shoulder Title, 1939-1942

A woven yellow / gold on black cloth shoulder title in very good condition, complete with its waxed hessian black backing (which is lifting on one side). This is much, much harder to come across than the bullion version.

According to Litchfield it was worn c.1939-1942. This has been substantiated by Len Whittaker, whose research showed that on the 24th August 1942, the GOC-in-C Anti-Aircraft Command wrote the War Office as follows: 'It is understood that the 99th ( London Welsh ) HAA Regt, RA was authorised in June 1939 to wear regimental shoulder titles with the words ' LONDON WELSH ' worked in worsted. The pattern was similar to that worn by the Welsh Guards, to which the regiment was affiliated. It went on to state that in view of paras 6 & 7 of ACI 2587 of 1941, it appears that these shoulder titles may no longer be worn ... and that it was desired to continue wearing the shoulder titles in order that the Regiment's special territorial connection may be maintained. It is requested, therefore, that permission may be granted for the wearing of these shoulder titles'. Despite a chaser sent some months later, the matter was inconclusively passed from pillar to post in various War Office Departments and no decision granting their continued use was forthcoming.
