WW1 Original Portrait Postcard Royal Sussex Regiment - C. Jefferies
In worn condition with corner damage, some creasing and not too neatly trimmed down right side, but a good clear image of a Pte in the Royal Sussex Regiment. Postally unused, photograher is Seaman's of Yarmouth and Colchester. In pencil to the reverse is C. Jefferies / 7th Buffs (sic). There is only one C Jefferies on the Medal Index card noted as serving with the Royal Sussex Regiment, and that is L9338 Pte & Lance Corporal Charles Jefferies.. MIC included. An L prefix was used in the case of the infantry by Home Counties Regiments, regulars. Entitled to 1914-15 Trio and first entered a theatre of war on 17th August 1915, interestingly 'Asiatic' (5Gii & iv). This theatre of war also covered the NWF of India as well; so this man is a 1st Battalion regular soldier sent out to India as part of a draft; as he has a L prefix to his number, he is a regular. Although they were in India from before 1914 they were not in a theatre of war until August 1915. They stayed and served on the NWF in 1919. not sure where the annotation 7th Buffs makes any sense, unless he served with them post war.
