Original Boer War Large Photograph of Trichards Boer Commando Middleburg Transvaal South Africa
A large format gloss photograph circa 8.25 inches wide and 6 inches tall, with some corner damage to two corners, minor edge damage and slight creasing. However, it is a stunningly clear photo with much interesting detail. I have not come across this image before, great view of Transvaal flag too. The text at the base of the photo states:
"Comdt Trichard & Son 12 Years of Age 1899"
In the medal roll (copy of relevant page to be provided) there is a Commandant Petrus Frederick Trichardt of the Middleburg Commando. Note throughout sources either give the spelling as 'Trichardt' or 'Trichard'.
These are fine looking fellows. My assumption is that the Commandant is the one seated and wearing the revolver, next his 12 year old son, who also has a rifle cradled in his arm and an ammunition bandolier across his shoulder. It appears that Trichard and his men were bitter enders from an account discovered on-line below.
Newspaper account London, 24th February 1902, reports:
Particulars which have come to hand of the recent capture of 164 Boers at Nooitgedacht on the Delagoa railway, by Colonel Parks' mounted force and a body of National Burgher Scouts, show that the troops under Colonels Parks, Williams, and Urmston, surprised three of Trichardt's laagers, but the members of the Boer Government and the notorious train-wrecker Jack Hindon escaped. Twenty of Trichardt's force surrendered at Middelburg, and Colonel Williams captured more on Saturday.
Included a note of Trichard's grave (died 1925) and his family included. Worthy of further research.
No returns on this item, sold as seen.
