WW2 RAF No 250 Sudan Fighter Squadron Desert Air Force Large Lapel Badge circa 1940s
A scarce No 250 Sudan Fighter Squadron Desert Air Force gilt and enamel lapel badge, taller than usual at circa 4.1cm tall. It depicts an African Fish Eagle with motto "Close To The Sun". The pin fitting to the reverse in excellent condition and fully functional, enamel intact and attractive.
No 250 Sudan Fighter Squadron provided support to the 8th Army up to and during the Battle of El Alamein; it then proceeded through both Egypt and Libya until the end of campaign in North Africa. After July 1943, the squadron operated out of Malta against targets in Sicily prior to its invasion and then moved to Sicily to engage hostile Italian targets. September 1943 saw the Squadron moved again, this time to the Italian mainland itself. It was disbanded at Treviso in early 1947.
