Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders (A&SH) ( 91st & 93rd Highlanders) White Metal Glengarry Cap Badge - Voided Centre, Cat's Tail Up
Sturdy white metal example of an other ranks cap badge. This is Sutherland Cat "Tail Up" variety as per the earlier badges. it has a fretted centre with 9 voids. A good stiff badge with two original copper lugs to the reverse, which have quite a long splayed foot, but original nonetheless.
This was the largest cap badge worn in the British Army. Until about 1908 the centre of the badge was solid, but after this date the central devices were fretted and voided. In the first voided badges, the cat's tail curled up behind in the fashion affected by heraldic lions but some busybody pointed out that comfortable cats did not wave their tails but tucked them quietly around their feet, thereafter subsequent issues did not show the tail (Gaylor p.47 refers).
K&K Vo1 1 No 698 refers.
