Zululand Mounted Rifles Collar Badge, circa 1903 - 1913
Very scarce Zululand Mounted Rifles (ZMR) collar badge, right facing, worn only c. 1904 -1913. Gilt suggests officer's issue, die struck, with two original lugs to the reverse. Circa 3.1cm tall and 3.4cm wide. Rhino above motto scroll is "Wa Tshe Tsha" and the scroll below this carries the words Zululand Mounted Rifles. Some slight wear to gilt on highpoints but a very scarce badge.
The ZMR were absorbed by the Umvoti Mounted Rifles in 1913, one of many units that disappeared after the Union of South Africa was established.
The ZMR took part in the Natal 1906 campaign, suppressing the Bambata ( Zulu ) rebellion. Despite being a very small unit (circa 90-155 men), they received five Distinguished Conduct Medals. Apparently an Intelligence section was formed out of the ZMR. The role of the ZMR in the Natal 1906 campaign (Bambata rebellion) can be read in this super account by Ken Gillings:
