Postally unused, gloss finish and blank reverse. An amazingly crisp original portrait with a very clear image of his wolseley sun helmet and pagri flash " 5 / Hants ", colour sergeant sash, pioneer crossed axes above sergeant chevrons to right arm, and his IGS medal ribbon, which dates the photo nicely to later in 1919.

1/5th Battalion The Hampshire Regiment ( Territorial Force ) HQ Carlton Place, Southampton was part of the Hampshire Brigade, Wessex Division. Mobilised on 5th August 1914, the Division was sent to India and remained there throughout WW1. In May 1919, the 1/5th Hants took part in the Third Afghan War and was awarded the India General Service Medal with clasp "Afghanistan NWF 1919 (6th May - 8th August 1919). The Division returned to the UK on the 8th November 1919.
