WW1 Canadian VALCARTIER Camp 1914 Mobilization Medallion

An unusual Silvered bronze with a bronze gilt inserted centrepiece medallion, obverse illustrating a rifle-bearing soldier in the centre, surrounded by the inscription "VALCARTIER CAMP 1914", military icons on all five arms, clockwise from the upper left: crossed rifles, cross cannons, crossed swords, horn and anchor.

Circa 40mm x 42mm, suspended from a 22 mm x 42mm ornate silvered bronze pin-back hanger inscribed " CANADA " . Blank to reverse except for the gilt centrepiece panel which is inscribed with the The Lord's Prayer in the smallest type I have ever seen.

In very good condition with some age toning and a slight and minor scuff to the medal close to the second letter 'A' in the word " VALCARTIER ". Original and functional pin and clasp.

Valcartier, Quebec was the primary training base for the First Canadian Contingent in 1914.

On 10 August 1914, the government established the strength of the First Canadian Contingent for overseas service at 25,000, the figure requested by London. They all traveled to a single, hastily prepared camp at Valcartier for equipment, training, and preparation for war. Eventually, the camp held over 35,000 troops.
