Rare WW1 Home Service Corps Bronze Shoulder Title ( Liverpool )

A die cast one piece bronze shoulder title with two original loops th the reverse and red felt cloth backing. Formed and commanded by “Colonel” Phyllis Mary Lovell, a Suffragette and FANY driver. The unit existed from September 1914 to March 1918. Circa 5cm wide. Rare.

Lovell founded the Home Service Corps in Liverpool in September 1914 to ensure that women in Liverpool were given the opportunity to replace men on the Home Front, thus releasing them for Active Service. Its HQ was at 38 Church Street. In May 1915 a second recruiting office was opened in Birkenhead. It was a uniformed, paramilitary organization whose aim was to get women to work collectively to help the war effort while still prioritizing their claim to full citizenship ( i.e. the vote). Its membership eventually reached over 2000, with branches in Rock Ferry, Southport, Ormskirk and Lytham as well as Liverpool. Lovell was ranked as ‘Colonel’. Phyllis Lovell died in 1972 in London.
