Scarce Connaught Ranger's Indian Mess Servant Badge and Large Button

Sold together as found. Elephant badge is a heavy solid cast brass with with two small lugs (north - south). Apparently worn on the front of the tunic and not the headdress. Circa 4cm wide and 3cm tall.

The button is gilt bronze with some wear to gilt and has an indent near the ear of the elephant. It has a fixed shank and is 27mm in diameter. Maker marked Woodrow & Co, London.

Chruchill details a number of early collar badges which had the caparison and girth straps (but no howdah). See items 1813, 1817 and 1818 on pages 289 and 290 respectively. I would date both of these items to the 1890s.

A scarce set.
