Blackened white metal lapel badge with buttonhole fixing to reverse. A rare badge to a voluntary unit formed in June 1915 to protect the cathedral from bombing raids. It numbered 260 men. Reraised in 1939 to do the same thing. Trained to deal with fires, incendiaries and gas attacks these volunteers protected the cathedral during the Blitz of Autumn 1940 to Spring 1941.
