1st Newcastle - on - Tyne Volunteer Engineer Officers Bronze Waist Belt Clasp (WBC)

A small rectangular plate bronzed with seeded background bearing the three castles of Newcastle town crest surrounded with a garter with the words 1st Newcastle - on - Tyne Engineers with a stylized V for volunteers below with a Victorian Crown to the top of a surrounding laurel wreath. Missing the free floating attachment ring, otherwise in good condition for age and scarce. Worn circa 18 - 1874.

The 1st Newcastle Engineer Volunteers were raised in 1860 mainly from the Armstrong Engineering works at Elswick. In 1874 the unit merged with the 1st Durham Engineer Volunteers, but were split out into three units again in 1888 as the 1st Newcastle upon Tyne RE (Volunteers), the 1st Durham RE (V), and the Tyne Division RE (V), Submarine Miners.
